Nearly every team in the Scottish Premiership made such a signing, some teams more than one. Scroll through to see those players who were signed but ultimately didn't live up to the billing.
The Irish international had cultivated a good career in England but didn't quite get to grip with the pace of the Scottish Premiership. After an excellent first half of the season at Kilmarnock the forward switched to Aberdeen and his form regressed hugely. Arrived from Borussia Dortmund in a position that needed strengthening but disappointed and frustrated fans. Brilliant for Kilmarnock last season, was signed late in the window but never got close to making his mark at Parkhead. Dundee bought the player from Hearts but set the tone of the season with an egregious mistake in the league opener. Lost his place soon after. Signed to bolster the club's defence but didn't play a game after breaking his foot. Twice. The striker arrived on loan from Norwich City but never looked comfortable on the pitch in the Scottish top flight, playing just a handful of times. His mid-season arrival was hyped up. Within a couple of outings Craig Levein was critical of the player's fitness and barely seen. The Australian international was expected to rekindle his impressive partnership with Florian Kamberi but injuries didn't help and struggled before leaving during the campaign. Returned following last season's loan spell but didn't have the same influence despite the excitement around his arrival. Returned ti Scotland on loan from Sporting CP. That precocious talent was seldom seen as he had injury difficulties Helped Wolves into the Premier League last season so arrived with good pedigree. Made just six appearances before returning in January. Brought back to Motherwell on loan but unfit and barely featured. Brought in to fill the left-back void but Stephen Robinson opted for a right-back in the position. Signed for a significant fee but disappointed when he played and could leave this summer. On loan from Roma, he must be good. Nope. Signed for money. Two Betfred Cup appearances. Wasn't on the winning side in any of his seven appearances. Wasn't the striker the Buddies needed. Appeared to limited. Has played some of his best football with the Saints but didn't have the same influence during the 2018/2019 season.
