US Capitol lockdown: Nancy Pelosi calls for 25th amendment or impeachment to remove Donald Trump after mob storms Capitol
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Trump from office.
She has stated that the US Congress will be prepared to start the impeachment process if Mr Pence does not comply.
In a statement, she said: “Justice will be done to those who carried out these acts, which were acts of sedition and acts of cowardice.
"To those whose purpose was to deter our responsibility, you have failed.
"In calling for this seditious act, the President has committed an unspeakable assault on our nation and our people.
"I join the Senate Democrat leader in calling on the Vice President to remove this President by immediately invoking the 25th Amendment.
"If the Vice President and the cabinet do not act, the Congress may be prepared to move forward with impeachment.
"That is the overwhelming sentiment of my caucus, and the American people by the way.”
Ms Pelosi is not the first politician to call for this, with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Senate Democrat leader Chuck Schumer and Republican former States Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao all backing the 25th.
The 25th Amendment allows the Vice President to declare the President "unable to discharge the powers and duties.”
This comes after Trump supporters stormed Capitol Building on Wednesday in Washington.
Four people died in the incident, and several police officers injured.
President Trump was asked several times throughout Wednesday to call a halt to his supporters and they charged at police officers.
He released one Tweet and one video asking for peace, and told his supporters: “we love you.”
