A report has claimed that Prince Andrew misled the BBC and the British public during an interview conducted and aired in November, 2019.

The Daily Mail claims that the royal did in fact stay at Jeffrey Epstein’s mansion during a visit in 2001, despite him insisting that he “definitely” did not.

Virginia Giuffre, formerly Virginia Roberts, who alleges that she was sex trafficked by Epstein to Prince Andrew, has previously claimed that the royal slept with her during this visit when she was aged 17.

The tabloid also allege that the Duke of York had several hours of “private time” coinciding with the alleged incident with Roberts.

Prince Andrew has previously denied all claims of wrongdoing, and in response to the Daily Mail’s story his team said: “It would not be appropriate to comment on any of these matters.”

What do the Daily Mail allege?

The Mail claim to have uncovered “never-before-seen documents” detailing Prince Andrew’s visit to New York City in 2001 when a second alleged encounter with Roberts is said to have taken place.

It claims that a window of “private time” on set aside for the royal on April 9 likely coincided with the arrival in New York City of Jeffrey Epstein, Virginia Roberts and two others.

The Mail go on to claim that Prince Andrew stayed at Jeffrey Epstein’s New York City residence on April 11 the final night of his stay.

It quotes a fax allegedly sent to London which read: “His Royal Highness will return to New York on the evening of 11th April after his visit to Boston. He will spend that evening at a private address in New York and will depart for Miami the following day”.

A source close to Prince Andrew is said to have conceded that the royal stayed at the East 71st Street, but that Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Giuffre weren’t present.

The confidential sources allegedly state that the Prince was staying at Epstein’s to save the taxpayer money.

What did Prince Andrew say in the interview?

When interviewed by Emily Maitlis Prince Andrew did not deny encountering Epstein during his 2001 visit.

The Mail, however, suggest that he lied about staying the night at the billionaire’s townhouse residence.

Asked whether he visited Epstein, Andrew said: “I probably did… because of what I was doing I was staying with the consul general which is further down the street on Fifth so I wasn’t… I wasn’t staying there. I may have visited but definitely didn’t, definitely, definitely no, no, no activity.”

What are Virginia Roberts’ accusations?

Virginia Giuffre, formerly known as Virginia Roberts, claims the duke had sex with her in March 2001 when she was 17, still a minor under US law, and weeks later in New York.

She also alleges they had sex a third and final time on Epstein’s private island when she was 18.

The duke categorically denies he had any form of sexual contact or relationship with Ms Giuffre.
