Grate balls of fire: unique firepits are hot ticket for lockdown gardens

What started out as a hobby for Scottish welder Kevin Hope has become a burgeoning second occupation.

The 45-year-old, who runs a steel fabrication yard with his father, made his first firepit three years ago, just for fun.

The unique creation – an impressive replica Tie Fighter from the Star Wars films – attracted a flurry of interest.

Now he has set up a sideline business, WKD Burners, and his handiwork is so sought-after he can barely keep up with the orders.

He even has celebrities on his client list, having created personalised firepits and barbecues for the likes of Scottish rugby legend Doddie Weir and comedian Kevin Bridges.

Some are commissioned as memorials, while others reflect a customer’s favourite football club or their nationality.

But all are works of art.

To get your own bespoke barbie will cost you from around £400, depending on the complexity of the design.

The Falkirk-based father of two has donated a number of his bespoke burners to charities that are close to his heart.

You could snap one up in the next few days while supporting a good cause in an online auction raising cash for the My Name'5 Doddie Foundation, in aid of motor neurone disease research and support.
