One time you need to be sure of your sizes is when you’re buying a Christmas tree online - and now you can be sure you can avoid getting the wrong size by using the John Lewis virtual reality app.

How does the app work?

The virtual reality feature from the retailer works by using the built in camera in your mobile device, allowing you to see your chosen Christmas tree in your living room.

Customers can even try out decorated or undecorated trees to see what they like, and, most importantly, see that it actually fits in the space.

Jason Billings-Cray, from John Lewis, said: “Choosing a Christmas tree can be a really special moment for any family as that tree can be with them for many years, this may be a little different, but all the family can see and choose one.”

How do I use the app?

To use the app, you’ll need to download the free John Lewis & Partners app from your app store - unfortunately it’s only available on iOS, which is bad news for Android owners.

Additionally, it’s also only supported on iPhones that are running iOS13 or later, so if you have an older device, you won’t be able to use the feature.

However, if you do have an iOS13 or later iPhone, the next step will be to open the app and search for Christmas trees.

Some of the Christmas trees will sport a “view in room” label, which is what you’re looking for if you want to try out the augmented reality feature from the retailer.

Next, open the product page and tap the “view in room” button. You’ll need to permit the app access to use your camera.

Select “get started” and hold the phone towards the floor and slowly move it from side to side to let the app scan the room.

When a square appears, tap it and it’ll load up your chosen Christmas tree. Double tap to turn the dimensions off and on.

Using one finger, you can move the tree around the room, and by using two fingers, you can rotate it to see a full 360 view.
